Today, Mrs. Penn-Lewis’s books are still widely read by Christians and deservedly so, but there is a significant exception: her most important book, War on the Saints, written in collaboration with the famous Welsh revivalist, Evan Roberts, had been only available in an abridged version. There are many books which can be abridged without losing content, but in the case of War on the Saints the word “abridged” is certainly the wrong one simply because the main thrust of her vital book was eliminated in the abridged and emasculated version. The editors based their decision to discontinue the original version “first and foremost” on their rejection of the important teaching regarding demon influence on Christians.

Jessie Penn-Lewis （1861-1927） was a Welsh evangelical speaker and author of a number of Christian evangelical works. Early life Penn-Lewis was born in Victoria Terrace, Neath in 1861. Her father was a Methodist minister. She was married to William Penn-Lewis.

Welsh revivalShe was involved in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival, one of the largest Christian revivals ever to break out, although the revival was abruptly shortened with the mental and physical collapse of one of the leaders, Evan Roberts. Penn-Lewis traveled internationally to take her message to audiences in Russia, Scandinavia, Canada, the U.S., and India.

Penn-Lewis was close to Evan Roberts and there is some controversy associated with her influence over him. After the breakdown by Roberts cut the revival short, he stayed with the Penn-Lewis’s for a couple of years, but never fully recovered. Ultimately, Penn-Lewis declared some of phenomena of the Welsh Revival to be the work of Satan, declaring her still controversial position in her book on spiritual warfare called War on the Saints, which describes the work of demons on Christians, the theme for which Penn-Lewis is most known.

Edward McKendree Bounds was a Methodist minister, revivalist, author and lawyer.

Unsuccessful in the California gold rush of 1849, E.M. Bounds returned home to Missouri and became the state’s youngest practicing attorney at age 19. In his early twenties, he was deeply impacted by the Third Great Awakening, and at age 24 he was ordained for ministry. During his lifetime as a pastor, traveled as an evangelist, served as a Civil War chaplain, edited a Christian periodical and was a devoted husband and father. But E.M. Bounds is best known for prayer. His daily habit was to spend the time between 4 am and 7 am praying. His writings on prayer are widely acclaimed to be among the finest of any author before or since.

F.J. Huegel（1889-1971）was converted while in college as he read The Life of Christ by F. W. Farrar. He gave himself thereafter to full-time ministry and served as a chaplain in World War I and as a missionary to Mexico for 25 years. He taught at Union Seminary in Mexico City. He also had an evangelistic ministry in Mexico’s prisons. Huegel wrote and traveled to speak for God on the power of the cross and the inner life of the believer through the believer’s participation in Christ.

• About the Author

Leslie Earl Maxwell (July 2, 1895 – 1984), was an American-born Canadian educator and minister.

Maxwell was born in Salina, Kansas in 1895. He was a graduate of the Midland Bible Institute, a short-lived school of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Kansas City. He was invited to come to the town of Three Hills, Alberta by J. Fergus Kirk, a Presbyterian lay preacher, and farmer. Maxwell’s assignment was to teach the Bible to the local young people through a structured curriculum he was to develop. On October 9, 1922, the Prairie Bible Institute was opened with eight students.

E. Maxwell readily became the school’s dynamic principle and eventual president. Under his leadership, Prairie Bible Institute grew to become Canada’s premier missionary training center with international influence among evangelical Christians. In addition to the Bible School in Three Hills, another Bible Institute was initiated in the north at Sexsmith, Alberta and a Christian Academy was added on the Three Hills campus in the 1930s. After Maxwell’s death in 1984 two more post-secondary schools were created to train missionary pilots and professional trades personnel. Today, as many as 900 students study each year at one of these five schools founded or influenced by L.E. Maxwell.

Over the course of his teaching ministry Maxwell authored several books including Born Crucified, Crowded to Christ, “Abandoned to Christ”. and World Missions: Total War. Another book he had been working on, Women In Ministry, was published after Maxwell’s death by co-author and fellow Bible educator, Ruth Dearing. After 58 years as principal, president, and professor, L. E. Maxwell retired in the spring of 1980 near the age of 85.

我们的主耶稣在世时，曾说过这样一句非常重要、且值得每个人深思的话：“我实在告诉你们，你们若不回转，变成小孩子的样式，断不得进天国。” （太18:3）主这话说得很绝对！祂又说：“父啊，天地的主，我感谢你！因为你将这些事向聪明通达人就藏起来，向婴孩就显出来。父啊，是的，因为你的美意本是如此.”（太11:25-26）为什么是这样？使徒保罗在他给哥林多教会的书信中这样解释：“世人凭自己的智慧，既不认识神，神就乐意用人所当作愚拙的道理拯救那些信的人；这就是神的智慧了。”（林前1:21）原来，这世上的“智慧”是神的智慧不同，甚至相反且敌对的！

其实我们中国人也算是一个很崇尚“智慧”的民族。我们的许多经书，从人的眼光看，似乎都在探求智慧。然而，我们津津乐道的智慧，说来说去，往往不过是一些与人斗争的“智慧”，寻求怎样在与人争权夺利的斗争中获取胜利，所谓运筹帷幄，老谋深算等等，说到底，很多成分不过是自私诡诈而已。就算走投无路，不得不走进宗教，也是想办法怎样贿赂神明，为己所用。因此，圣经说：“神岂不是叫这世上的智慧变成愚拙吗？”（林前 1:20）然而这样的属世界的“智慧”却充斥在我们文化的方方面面、角角落落！我们也或多或少地带着这样的“智慧”走进教会的。因此，主呼召我们要回转，就是放弃这种我们曾经追求的，甚至是我们乐在其中的“聪明、智慧”；我们也只有真的放下这些东西，才能机会得到神的真智慧。

因此，弟兄姊妹们，我们要怎样回应主的呼召，回转！象小孩子的样式，彻底放弃我们曾经从世上所得来的属世的智慧；好使我们能明白从神而来的启示呢？因圣经指明这世上的智慧不是真智慧，而且这属世界的智慧会拦阻我们认识神，引导我们走错路，得不着从神来的真理和启示。但我们已经是成年人，我们里面不可能变成思想真空。因此，回转不是单单抛弃属世界的智慧；乃是要用属灵的智慧取代属世界的智慧。这属灵的真智慧都写在圣经里。让我们预备一颗回转而谦卑受教的心，让圣灵作工，理智地抛弃以前属世的智慧；好使神的真智慧成全在我们里面。
